I'll Do Anything

Hans Zimmer

" Pleasant entry takes us back to the mellow Zimmer "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

I'll Do Anything, one of the commercial flops of director James L. Brooks career (about a man who takes care of his six year old daughter) was the first time composer Hans Zimmer worked with the director of Terms of Endearment fame. The result is an easy going charmer. The sound here is typically Hans Zimmer like and listens extremely pleasant once people get acquainted with the suites-like structure of Hans Zimmer's soundtracks.

I'll Do Anything delivers all kinds of musical styles, from bouncy tunes to mellow saxophone. The score fluently continues to sound relaxing and easy going. It mimics the style of such scores like Green Card, Renaissance Man (same year), Regarding Henry (some instruments) and Nine Months. For instance, there's a moment with vocals and saxophone at the end of "Burke" that immediately reminds you of Renaissance Man, while the mellow string work will take you forward to Nine Months. It all contributes to the soul of I'll Do Anything.

There are several themes that tie the score together. First there's a kind of children's lullaby which is frequently heard during the first track "Matt". It is a light bouncy tune and adds just the kind of mellow feel to the entire character story. Yet it isn't as mesmerizing as the second theme, heard during the first four minutes in "Jeannie". It is one of the better themes of Zimmer's career and gets just the kind of intriguing quality when the instruments make it swell bigger and better.

The third theme, Cathy's theme in the end bounces forward in the appropriately named track "Cathy", this under the guidance of an ever increasing beat. Tthe song performed by the little girl in the film is one I rather skip. In fact, while I'll Do Anything does just about everything right, it is typical mellow Zimmer but also likeable.

The secondary theme does make a difference when one spots it in the fourth track "Jeannie", especially once it grows with A League of Their Own strings to a satisfying conclusion. Which brings me to the point that I'll Do Anything is just a relaxing and nice background score, that is incredibly easy to listen to. It moves along like Regarding Henry, creating an easy flowing experience that will be accepted by the Hans Zimmer fans that love his more sentimental softer mood.
