I Love Trouble

David Newman

" I love saxophone "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Charles Shyer (of Baby Boom and Father of the Bride) thought it would be a good idea to place Julia Roberts with another older actor to recreate that Pretty Woman feeling for the romantic comedy I Love Trouble. Sadly for many, Nolte couldn't deliver the Richard Gere vibe and the film couldn't' equal the Pretty Woman charm, delivering a typical fun if unremarkable watch. For the music, originally Elmer Bernstein was chosen, but eventually his score was rejected (which wasn't the first time for the late Elmer Bernstein), leaving very little time for David Newman to deliver an effective replacement score. And though showing all the signs of a typical Newman score, one has to applaud David for turning in something this entertaining.

The score has a Father of the Bride feeling all around its notes, probably because of the extensive use of the lovely saxophone (and perhaps even for the fact Alan Silvestri is acknowledged in the credits). But no matter the comparisons one can easily make (the dancing strings in "Honeymoon Night" does sound like Father of the Bride), Newman's style is all over the place, most notably when he delivers the lovely rhythmic breeze in tracks such as "Scoop de Jour" (those trumpet fanfares) and "I Love Trouble". The fact Newman has 3 themes standing by (for Peter, Sabrina and their own love theme) shows that I Love Trouble delivers more than one bargained for.

These themes weave through one another easily and fluently, often during the very same track. The love theme is dancing around the jazzy elements in "Honeymoon Night", Sabrina's theme gets picked up in "Keyhole Foreplay" and Peter's theme happens to be everywhere, often played just briefly to point out his presence. And even though everything sounds remarkably lovely, the strength of I Love Trouble lies in the fact David makes all 3 themes glide through one another without a single glitch. It may make your listening experience rather soothing and unremarkable, but the 3 themes are lovely if simple, and deliver the typical I feel Good vibe from start to finish. Something that can easily be said about I Love Trouble in the end.

Favorite Moment - Scoop de Jour (0.01 - 1.22)
I love the fluent thematic approach of Newman here
