Ice Age: Collision Course is not anymore from the makers that started this franchise so long ago. And somehow I think they still wanted John Powell to return for this fifth run. But in the end, John Debney was a logical, safe and decent choice. The choice however for this kind of music is not something I want to listen to. Mostly in the mayhem, John Powell still found that perfect balance to keep us interested (well most of the time). Debney's music is large and very well written, but also all over the place. Plus it seriously lacks themes, because those tunes usually tied it all together. Sadly not for little old me, even if the final tracks do deliver a more coherent and entertaining mix. Alas, this is not The Jungle Book, but more the John Debney we heard before (Meet Dave).
Symphonic like Debney is known for.
Lots of the Debney choir is heard too.
In the finer moments, it feels like Zathura (with courtesy of the choir).
"Sealing the Volcano", one of the finer melodic moments (perhaps if it occasionally mimicked the theme of Powell).
The second part that seriously influences your final rating.
In the end it remains a giant mickey mousing affair, you really have to be for it.
Because in the film it will definitely make lots of sense, on CD it's a mixed energetic bag.
Plus, you truly miss the themes of John Powell (the lullaby and the heroic mammoth's theme).
