Immortals

" Immortals doesn't win of 300 "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

It's clear where Immortals got the mustard from. How else can you describe the identical cool look it shares with 300? Nonetheless the movie seems to capture audiences alike (despite lacking the amazing cast and feel of 300). For the music Trevor Morris of The Tudors was chosen. This is evident once we hear the more dramatic parts of Immortals. Infusing more ethnic material but holding the same dramatic underscore is what Immortals definitely does best of all. I'm even bound to say that Immortals succeeds more on the dramatic parts than it does on the action parts. "Theseus and Phaedra" is a brief track that reminds me his The Tudors style, "My Own Heart" grows from ethereal underscore to a brief but lovely choral ending and the proud choral hymn in "Apotheosis" is definitely the feel good finale of the film (and score).

One thing about Immortals is clear though, it is pretty damn loud. Morris isn't shy to deliver some powerful battle music here. You'll hear plenty of choral based pieces, percussive suspense and growling attacks to last a lifetime. Meaning it's pretty powerful and loud, but not necessarily memorable. Rarely do we hear a more thematic approach (several examples are "Ride to the Gates" which infuses a thematic melody around the action, as does "Battle in the Tunnel").

No Immortals is more about sharp Goldenthal brass (I'm sure "Immortal and Divine" will send shivers down your spine), Terminator 2 growls ("Immortal and Divine", "Witness Hell") or moody suspense ("Theseus Fight the Minotaur" is a huge disappointment, as is the boring "Theseus Fires the Bow"). The marching Dracula choir in "The Gods Chose Well", the ferocious pounding action music of "Witness Hell", "Fight So Your Name Survives" or the Angels & Demons inspired choral moments in the entertaining "Immortal Combat" and "Sky Fight / End Credits" are several tracks that deserve some attention. Perhaps it's best to describe Immortals trailer music inspired. It carries that same relentless powerful no nonsense approach.

Immortals may be a powerful piece of music, it doesn't win of 300. It may (thankfully) dismiss the obvious rips of Goldenthal's Titus, but it lacks the heart of the emotional pieces of 300, and it can not surprise nor captivate me with its effective and enjoyable pounding action music. For that it lacks the creativity of a good score. I could call it a score that continues the trend of today's music (most notably the RC method), but lacking a main theme, a hook and above all a melodic approach. And yet despite all that, Immortals fits its movie perfectly. So if you're hesitant about the music, best check out the film first. Because I may have enjoyed Immortals, it doesn't mean I'll listen to it again.
