Jane Eyre

John Williams

" John Williams heightens the tale of Jane Eyre "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release

Jane Eyre has seen its fair share of adaptations, movie versions and soundtrack releases. And somehow for most people John Williams' version will be remembered more than all the others (including the recently Dario Marianelli version). Why? Because it is simply John Williams magic in a short edition. Williams his love theme, Williams his main theme and Williams his 3rd theme are all top notch and well rooted in the magical classical era that forged all those legendary tunes. Jane Eyre is no exception and shows its wonderful skills whenever these themes unfold.

In between that, the score changes its tone completely. Cold, slightly mysterious, even downright atonal and shrill, Williams delivers equally harsh and unloving material for a woman growing up the harsh way. These moments are definitely the opposite of what any fan might remember of this score, but their effective and brutal nature are memorable nonetheless, especially through the improved sound quality. Speaking of this remastered edition, the sound quality has definitely improved, creating a more engaging listening experience. Though one can never compare it with a sound recording of today's movie music, Jane Eyre has never sounded so powerful (though the piano work in "Love Theme from "Jane Eyre" does hurt once it's performed too loudly).

So the improved sound quality means, magic time whenever the 3 themes appear. The wonderful love and 3rd theme's performance in "Love Theme from "Jane Eyre"", the soaring version of the main theme reaching brief momentum in the thunderous "To Thornfield", the 3rd theme's strongest outing in "Restoration" or all 3 theme's wonderful climax in "Reunion (End Title)" are to be remembered. By the way, the last track is even more memorable due to an enchanting piano performance. Add to that a dance sequence for violin that honestly reminded me of Fawlty Towers, and you receive Jane Eyre, a strong John Williams theme soundtrack that stands the test of time. Seriously, this is one for John Williams enthusiasts who never dreamed of Jane Eyre before.
