" Josh and S.A.M. / Thomas and Newman "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Josh and S.A.M. is a 1993 American drama-comedy film revolving around two brothers who hate each other and how they react to their parents' divorce. It stars Noah Fleiss, Jacob Tierney, Martha Plimpton, and a young Jake Gyllenhaal. Not particularly known to the mass populas, the only reason I ever heard of the movie was because a certain Thomas Newman did the music. And so be it, Varèse Sarabande released some 30 minutes of his music in 1993.

Opening with "Is You All a Problem (Main Title"), we immediately recognize Thomas Newman's distinct style. Eclectic, bouncy, strange. Though it may give you an indicator for what to expect, Josh and S.A.M. is not full of these moments. A neat little cue is "Night Drive" (which has the music used in the trailer of The Greatest Game Ever Played, also heard in "Orchard"), another one is "Ouagadougou" and "Utah Proper" (with its playful oboe). "Trains" continues the trend with a fun mix of percussion and brief fanfares and "Nowhere" will surely remind us a bit of Scent of a Woman.

Though Newman's finest material still comes when he gives us something dramatic (whether light or bold). The soft but lovely "In Her Care" and "Brothers", the eerie "Saltwater Palace" and the dramatic "Bus to Canada" and "Cold Corner" are extremely lovely to listen to. The eccentric "End Title" mixes several sfx in the background to end the score the way it began.

Josh and S.A.M. might not be much in general, it is a fun background score nonetheless. One that has the typical quirky music of Newman, and one that has his nice and soft dramatic music. Giving us a nice 30 minute presentation of his much beloved style. I think for true Newman fans, Josh and S.A.M. is something they'll love to hear. It will not give them something they haven't heard before, but I'm sure it will deliver them something they'll wanna hear. For orchestral fans, check out his more beloved entries.
