Kimberly

Basil Poledouris and Eric Colvin

" The music makes Gabrielle Anwar even cuter, I know I couldn't believe it at first too. "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

During the last years of his life composer Basil Poledouris was searching for the projects that meant something to him. And in 1999 he found that in the shape and form of Kimberly, the directorial debut of Frederic Golchan. The movie itself didn't do all that well (despite having the always reliable Sean Astin and the cute as ever Gabrielle Anwar on board), but music wise there was none better suited than Basil Poledouris to tie the music together with the visual. The result is this charming score released by Varèse Sarabande.

Stylistically, there isn't much that's needed to set the heart of the listener or viewer in motion, meaning this is all lovely stuff. Offering a highly charming main theme as cornerstone to the entire album, Kimberly does remarkably well on the listening experience scale. The main theme that truly enlightens the experience (especially due to the lovely strings) in "Kimberly Main Title" and "Proposal / Finale" is only beaten once it fuels the brimming excitement in "The Race". In this track the theme soars as the music grows towards its climax.

The rest combines soft emotional and comical stuff all in one. For instance "Wake Up" and "Rush to the Hospital" are comical scherzos, all the while emotional heart is flourishing in "Dating and Training", "Deeper Relations" and "New Years / Benchkiss". There's a nice saxophone in "Early Row" and a charming variation of the main in "Guy Montage" as well.

Kimberly in the end can best be described as a gentle, fine romantic / comedic little twist that you can play if you're feeling a little bit down, because once you've encountered the very first main theme version, there is no need to be sad again. I'm not really a sucker of the comical scherzo's, but they do bring life and flair to an already charming little affair. And Kimberly is that charming little affair. The strangest part is actually that Kimberly seems to be composed mostly by Eric Colvin *, considering Basil just wrote a couple of cues and Eric did the rest. Talk about faulty advertising.

* Thank to Erik Woods for pointing that out
