La Vita davanti a Sé (The Life Ahead) is a 2020 film directed by Edoardo Ponti, the son of Sophia Loren. It stars Sophia Loren as Madame Rosa, who takes the streetwise 12-year-old Senegalese orphan Momo, played by Ibrahima Gueye, under her wings. The music is by Gabriel Yared. La vita davanti a sé may very well be her last great performance, but her role in Una giornata particolare is still her best film. La vita davanti a sé is based on the same novel as the 1976 La vie devant soi, featuring an impressive role by Signore Soneret and a great score by Philipe Sarde.

Gabriel Yared' emotional premise was based on the Jewish background of Madame Rosa, related to the Second World War. In the film she listens to a Hebraic stage play, which was adopted into a Jewish influenced main theme, evident in the wonderfully colorful, soft and melancholic cues such as Madame Rosa and Momo and Rosa. In other cues Yared uses his understated sense of drama, performed by low-key use of electronic ambience, piano, guitars and strings. It does everything to create a bond between the two characters in the film.

In addressing the mind and world of Momo, the composer attempts to mimic hip hop, as heard in People Call Me Momo and Drug Dealing Montage. It’s not bad, but it isn’t good either.

La Vita davanti a Sé is a memorable, introvert Gabriel Yared score. The digital release is by Plaza Mayor Company, a label that has gradually become one of the most important players in the market.
