Loch Ness

Trevor Jones

" A myth is finally unleashed upon us "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release

Many movies have been made about the legendary monster of the lake Loch Ness, but mostly they were horror based, using Nessie as a monster that attacked unknowing tourists. However one I know used the legend in a friendly, family approach to let the children imagine whether or not the creature ever existed. The movie today is largely forgotten, but one aspect remained hyped until today. And that was its score, composed by none other than thematic wizard Trevor Jones.

After his success of The Last of the Mohicans and Cliffhanger, Trevor Jones was a logical choice for the family adventure. And this is evident after already one minute of music! Sadly back then, popular scores were forgotten rather easily. Not by the people but by the labels. Today like so many classic scores, it has resurfaced by a small unknown label called Perseverance Records. The first print of a 1000 copies went quickly out of print, while the second batch was equally successeful. For me, it was evident that I wasn't the only one who thought Loch Ness was a good enough album.

Why? Because it's Trevor Jones at his best. The theme is the center piece, gracing after 30 seconds already the track "Main Title" through a large and lovely performance. This track also shows the 2 other themes of the film, but we'll come back to those later.

A folksy melody is used for the locals and heard in tracks as "Introducing the Locals" and "The Fight" while this Scottish flair gets one blazing orchestral performance in the best track of the album, namely "The Expedition Prepares". A true Jones track that stuns you in the film, this is the moment where you bless the brass players and Jones himself for such wonderful material. Some darker material (custom with Trevor Jones soundtracks) is heard in "The Keeper of the Loch", "Local Antagonism" and "We're Going out Again", yet luckily they aren't too intrusive.

As said, there are multiple themes in the score. There's the family theme in "Isobel's Nessie Impressions", "Nice Eyes" and "A Present for Mr. Dempsey", while the various folksky melodies bring us the sub themes for the people, loch and mystery. However, there is still a finale to speak off. And no better way to present it with "Nessie", a wonderful majestic performance that show us Jones at his best. "Return to the Highlands" isn't the Rod Stewart version of "Rhythm of my Heart", but actually a variation of it.

Why it had to take so long for Loch Ness to surface is a mystery, because I feel it has lost a bit of its magic after all this time (not strange if you watched the movie over and over again for those themes). But it still has other magic, namely its entire selection of thematic outbursts of its multiple themes. And don't forget that Trevor Jones' mystery and magic is all around Nessie, giving you the proof that Nessie exists when you play this soundtrack. And there's no better way to unlock such as mystery as playing Loch Ness of Trevor Jones after all this time.
