Mad Max: Fury Road

Tom Holkenborg

" The modern blockbuster score with many problems "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the deluxe edition

Mad Max: Fury Road had a long production journey, but the result it worth it. The score itself received a different composer than perhaps most people wanted to hear. A long time ago, there was even word of John Powell. What a percussive feast that would have been. Either way, the composer who eventually got the gig was Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL).

The score itself is a heavy burden, especially in this version. Extended tracks that drag the experience, bonus tracks that add nothing new. The music itself isn't always good too, especially the begin is dark, brooding, lots of musical sfx and chock full of angry suspenseful music ("The Bog" is a perfect example of this). The kind that works easily on your nerves. The fact it reminds me from time to time of Man of Steel isn't helping me either ("The Chase", "Claw Trucks").

And then suddenly out of nowhere comes "Brothers in Arms", a track that begins like any of the previous tracks before it, but suddenly out of nowhere adding an insanely catchy and modern Tron / Oblivion like theme to it, putting it right up there with the best tracks of the year. I kid you not. And besides that, we even have dramatic and tender tracks that surely will work on screen, cues that touched me more than perhaps expected ("We Are Not Things", "Redemption" and perhaps his most sincere track of all "Many Mothers"). The final tracks dare to deliver some kind of powerful encore too ("Let Them Up" and "Coda").

Mad Max: Fury Road is a score that's horrible to listen to in these extended circumstances. A much shortened version can bring some respite, when you carefully delete and add what's important for you. If you do that I suppose you can make something decent of it.
