Meitantei Konan Harowin no Hanayome (Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween) is the latest in the series of films. There's not much to tell about the film, which at best is a mediocre, but nevertheless enjoyable animated detective story. However, the most abrupt change is that the spiritual father of the series, composer Katsuo Ōno, did not write the original score, for reasons unknown, replaced by the excellent Yûgo Kanno.

The overall scores of Katsuo Ōno always sounded like cheap demos, raising serious doubts about his compositional skills. Nevertheless, they always served their minimal dramatic and quirky purpose. As expected, Kanno' intent for his score does not feel very different from previous entries, but deviates through the majority of his musical instruments, adding a wealth of mature sounding live instruments (oboe, violins, clarinet, chorus...) and more current standard electronics. As a standalone listen, it's less adjective and, thanks to the more professional sound and his finesse abilities as a composer, it touches a level of musical engagement that Ōno could never realize.

In taking the helm for this new entry, Kanno was very concerned with the expectations of people accustomed to Katsuo Ōno' efforts, primarily targeted at how he would adapt the familiar main theme. Of all the worries a composer could have, this was the least of them; a fine conversion. Nonetheless, he felt insecure, perhaps simply showing humbleness, and pleaded for the blessing of the spiritual composer.

Yûgo Kanno does lend musical instrumentation and ideas from previous entries, some complementing Ōno' work, closely following the familiar construct of previous instalments, in which any composer would serve the film' purpose and the wishes of the makers first. Luckily, he adds enough to make this indisputably the best score of the franchise.
