Mr. Destiny

David Newman

" short but entertaining David Newman score "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Mr. Destiny (starring James Belushi, Linda Hamilton, Jon Lovitz, Michael Caine, Courteney Cox, and Rene Russo) plays out the typical 'what if' concept, resulting in a less than stellar run at the box office (especially for Belushi's films around that time). Though the movie does everything right, something didn't click with audiences. Hopefully it had nothing to do with David Newman's score, which is perfect accompanying material. In fact, like the film this score is doing everything right in the expected category. It has it all, and for 30 minutes (a standard running time back then) Mr. Destiny listens like a perfect short listening experience.

The win fans will have with this score is the magical fanfare that Newman composed for this score. Basically it stands for the change in Larry's life, but also for his realization that it might not be such a bad life at all. Heard with amazing effect in "Mr. Destiny" and "Larry's Life is Changed", it's the typical fantastical and magical encore that makes the album worth it. It's such a normal thing to accept for David Newman connaisseurs, yet at the same time it makes all the fuzz if you hear it changing Larry's life in track 3. And that's what they call movie magic.

What you receive as extra material after that is the expected fare. A darker opening for "Main Titles", a lounge piano moment for "Cindy Joe's Present" and some exciting action fanfares for the arrival of "Larry Meets Jerry". The final cue "Larry is Home" puts all the lovely moments of this score in one culmination, yet without stating that glorious main theme. In fact, it's this main fanfare theme and this magical effect it has which basically makes a grand difference for the experience. And for some fans it might not be enough, but for David Newman admirers Mr. Destiny will deliver the magic they were longing for.

Favorite Moment - Larry's Life is Changed (1.15 - 1.56)
As said, movie magic
