Murder in the First

Christopher Young

" horror composer brings emotional brilliance which other non horror composers could not have brought "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

It was only a matter of time when Christopher Young would surprise us all. Now he is known as a composer who can tackle all various styles. Back then it was hard to imagine what if! But each composer has a side we haven't heard yet, and back then we were waiting for the example of that side. And suddenly Murder in the First came into our lives. Enter an emotional, burdensome tale that demanded this in musical equivalence. And what Christopher Young delivers here is nothing but mere excellence. After all his main theme is one for Oscar consideration, and it was quite a disappointment to discover it wasn't nominated in the first place.

The score has as said one amazing main theme. And the beauty is, it elevates the score beyond comparison. And when orchestra and choir join forces, you receive emotional music that reaches for the heart. "Murder in the First" opens the score and states the equally astonishing secondary theme, this is followed by the orchestral performance of the main theme. And luckily, the tracks that follow upon this brilliant opener are just as good.

"All Things Visible" has wonderful cello solos and "Solitary Confinement" grows majestically to a climax in the first minute. The first performance of the main theme with choir is in "The Truth be Known". Diverse marches are for "Movietone News" and "Suitcase Sally". While the first is rather cool and sprightly, it is a bit awkward they follow after the most emotional tracks of the entire album. In a way they break up the mood.

Of course this is but a mere glitch in an otherwise fantastic listening experience. "D Block" is one of the best tracks (with growing emotional material) and "Redemption" brings forth emotion you can't describe. Yes the main theme with choir.

So, it might mean that the main theme makes the album, but there's still plenty of amazing stuff outside that theme. And that together makes for a wonderful listening experience. I really like that secondary (drama) theme and then we still have the cello versions which are of course without hesitation lovely. Murder in the First basically doesn't flow around that main theme alone, but it does make it much more meaningful. And then it is important to have such a moment of Oscar worthy attention.
