Nigdy nie mów nigdy

Nigdy nie mów nigdy (Never Say Never) is a 2009 Polish romantic comedy directed by Wojciech Pacyna , with a cast including Anna Dereszowska, Jan Wieczorkowski and Wojciech Pacyna. The film tells the clichéd story of the wealthy, independent single Ama, whose attempts to get impregnated have thus far failed, as have her relationships. It really is an often tried, and in this case uninteresting, concept, but it does feature the enchanting presence of actress Dereszowska and the relieving music by Marcin Macuk.

According to his biography, Marcin Macuk is an example of a versatile musical person that made his scoring début with no less than three full-length films in 2009: Moja krew, Afonia i pszczoly and Nigdy nie mów nigdy.

The score is performed by the acoustic guitar, electronic bow reverberations, contrabass, (Wurlitzer) piano, trumpet and a string quintet, which is hardly a surprising setup. Macuk puts an emphasis on pleasant melodic softness, lacking personality (it could have been written by anyone), but nonetheless it is endearing music. Somehow, in the genre of the romantic comedies that is all one needs to hear. Another thing is absence of diversity in the compositions, but the many short takes on the limited few musical ideas, are functional and unobtrusive in the film. It is something that is, thankfully, not reflected on the cd release, as I suspect it would not work well.

The music the composer wrote to Nigdy nie mów nigdy lacks creativity and diversity, yet the soft endearing music supports the love entanglements on-screen pleasantly.
