Rent-a-Cop

Jerry Goldsmith

" this is not one of Jerry's best "

Written by Justin Boggan - Review of the limited release

Goldsmith made few foray's into mainly synth scores, with Logan's Run being a prominent example -- love or hate it, and of course ... Rent-A-Cop.

Jerry's score opens with the deceptively wonderful semi 80's power anthem theme, a theme with a beat, the lovely synths Goldsmith was known to sprinkle in his scores during that era, drums, a nicely done trumpet solo, and just high spirited 80's goodness. I say "deceptively" because all these wonderful things are absent from the rest of the score until the last cue (sans one track), "Jump" -- which is essentially an end credits expanded reprise. Sure, the synth (used too heavily), the 80's electronic sounding drums, and repeating beats are there occasionally, but the body of the score just meanders around and offers very little.

Stand out tracks are basically a recap of what I said before: the opening track ("Rent-A-Cop") and "Jump", and "Lonely Cop" & "They Need Me" (the latter having some nice orchestrations) -- which are basically rehashes of the theme material from the opening cue.

As a side note to that, the expanded Intrada CD contains two bonus cues: Goldsmith conducted, Nancy Beach arranged Christmas instrumental pieces. Absolutely charming and a wonderful bonus. Little about Beach comes up in a Google search, and she seems to be quite elusive; she orchestrated on some Goldsmith scores.

In the end, this is not one of Jerry's best, it's not one of his second best. It's more of "like it" or "hate it" scenario. The sound samples at Intrada's site are fairly spot on, on what the CD has to offer. Maybe it serviced the movie, but as a stand alone CD, it's not exactly the "Gold Standard".
