Scream 4

Marco Beltrami

" I stabbed him 4 times sir, and still he's composing horror music "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Apparently Scream had a few stabs left, considering number 4 aired 11 years after the final Scream 3. Now it seems that the audience still isn't fed up with the masked man yet, considering the movie did tremendously well at the box office. And who could blame the audience if there are still enough hotties left to kill (Lucy Hale, Shenae Grimes, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts and let's not forget Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox). Once again the formula worked, and all the people that made the Scream franchise such a success returned for a (final?) showdown, including composer Marco Beltrami.

The thing is, what has Scream 4 that the others didn't have? Honestly not that much, but I love the choral drama at the end of "You're not Real", the Broken Arrow inspired theme for Dewey in "Dewey in the Morning", the ominous percussion in "Don't Spoil It" or the dramatic climax in "I Got it Right". The horrific chase music is pretty much standard stuff. Comparing the ones we heard in all the Scream scores, this is pretty much the same ordeal. Meaning wonderfully refined horror music that lacks the original tone after a while. There are a couple of nice energy shots in "Which Closet?", "You are the Message", "I Got it Right", "The After-After Party" and "Don't Spoil It, Part 2" though.

Of course there are things that need to return. The rock tone for the community of Woodsboro ("Cheating on my Diet / Woodsboro 2010" or the theme for Sidney ("When you Let Someone Go", "It's my Rental", "I Know How you Feel", "Your Ingenue Days Are Over"), they continue to work well, even after all this time.

Now would I recommend Scream 4 if you already have the other Scream scores? Well, if you already have them all, there is no point leaving the 4th one behind. For me it offers a couple of nice additions (the end of track 1 is particularly memorable) that could definitely make it on a Scream compilation score for sure, but altogether (like the films) it's Marco Beltrami following the same recipe he used in the first 3 (with an occasional new flavor here and there). So is Scream 4 worth it? I was never a fan of it, but if you were I'm assuming it will amuse you.
