Serial Mom

Basil Poledouris

" Slasher Mom gets enjoyable background music "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Serial Mom is a satirical comedy from start to finish, with Kathleen Turner as the unexpected serial killer mom that reacts to the tiniest imperfections, resulting in her committing murders in the end. Even though Serial Mom is a pleasant watch for a Saturday afternoon, it lacks the wit to make it memorable. Even the vicious performance of Kathleen Turner can't help that, despite her efforts when making prank and offensive phone calls (which are featured on this CD for some apparent reason).

Yes, what a joy it is once again to hear dialogue running through the musical selections of this soundtrack. Of course there will be no dialogue during the 2 songs because that would be an offense to the artist that made their contribution to this CD, so expect them to appear during the musical selections of Basil Poledouris' effective score, which of course isn't a offensive thing to do.

The screaming and heavily breathing song of the begin aside, from track 2 till the end everything sounds the way one would expect it. From the happy nothing can hurt us "Daybreak" song of Barry Manilow to the warm and even slightly epic theme heard in "Main Title", from the twinkles that capture the innocent suburban neighborhood to the first sign of the mom's dark intentions in "It's Been a Crazy Day, Hasn't It?, Serial Mom delivers it fashionable and enjoyable.

In fact, Poledouris does it even more than fashionable, he delivers it beyond par. The nice main theme is an unexpected bonus that rises to the occasion during most of the tracks on the album (most notably in "Main Title", exciting during "The Sterner Payback" and resolving in "I'm Coming Home"). The at times interesting action music when something murderous or suspenseful is happening ("It's Been a Crazy Day, Hasn't It?" and the exciting "Buckle Up, Scotty"), Serial Mom delivers you music with a standard higher than expected.

Luckily the dialogue stays clear from the music, always delivering it before the music starts and after the music has finished, but it still is questionable whether this will sell or attract unexpected listeners. In fact it could even become downright offensive considering there's a nice selection of swearing in the 4th track that will make Mommy go berserk at her own turf. Luckily Basil Poledouris delivers the rest in an enjoyable and at times exciting listen, enough for you to remember that at least some suburban neighborhoods are pleasant to walk around in.
