Shark Night 3D

Graeme Revell

" Sharks can't stand music either, so they start attacking! Nuff said! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the download only release

Cool! Sharks in 3D. Or bikinis in 3D. Either way, Shark Night wanted to continue what Piranha 3D set into motion. Blood and gore in the water seen through 3D glasses. Of course one way or another, it failed. It didn't have the humor Piranha had, and it didn't have a cast people cared about (even though I'm a sucker for Sara Paxton). Music wise director David R. Ellis went for New Zealand composer Graeme Revell. Not directly the best choice considering Shark Night's a boring festivity of atonal themeless music.

Yes I wasn't expecting the world of Shark Night, but I was still assuming there would be some kind of structure. Even the weak efforts of several composers still contain a theme one relied on, and an interesting approach that we could find ourselves in. Well forget that, because this one's all about gloom, mood, suspense, attacks and boredom. I know Graeme Revell isn't the best composer out there, but he has churned out better efforts than this.

Basically Shark Night is hideous from the get go. The opening track "Opening Titles" is nothing more than rocking electric guitars, continued by "First Attack" which is your typical atonal suspense music. That's followed by a track I swear could have jumped out of Gone in 60 Seconds (the bad parts), followed by eerie suspense in track 4, followed by ... Well, you get the picture. Seriously even "Sara's Story" is gloomy as hell, and "Nick and Dennis Fight" has the honor of having a brief suspense motif that actually survives the dirty ruckus. Of course it's expected "Everthing's Fine" closes the experience with some approachable music (even though it's synthesized).

Trust me, Shark Night is a score that never should have seen the light of day. Luckily it's only a download release, but paying 0.99 dollars per track is even too much for the whole score. There's nothing here that makes the experience even remotely interesting, and my gut tells me it's only used to torture sharks so they actually would start attacking. Not even worth a chew.
