Species
Christopher Young
" A Young Natasha Henstridge finally receives Special Attention from Intrada's hamsters "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release
Species was for many the introduction to the lovely Natasha Henstridge, the ultra sexy and seductive Alien called Sil. Now it seems she has disappeared from the radar, doing mostly Television and low budget movies. Anyhow, how lovely it was seeing her naked in Species, it was lovelier when we heard the composer's voice supporting it. After all somebody called her having "Milky Way Breasts" in the track listing.
Christopher Young, a composer with enough experience in the horror department (and a man who was a keen sense of humour when it concerns track titles) was in a way destined to score the movie. And now, 13 years later Species went from a costly promo to the real thing, a limited edition from Intrada's special collection. For now it isn't sold out yet, so if you want Extra Terrestrial attention, you better move fast.
The score starts with "Species", a lovely addictive main theme for choir that is both alienating, intriguing and mystical. Notice however that the theme is played faster than on the Space and Beyond compilation. There are numerous versions (or variations of the theme), for instance mysterious in "Protostar", faintly in "Are you Out There Somewhere", soothing in "Bax Max" and reprising its star like quality in "Star Bright".
There's a hefty doses of suspenseful, horror music too and it doesn't take long when we face "A Vibrant Slime", a thunderous exciting percussion feast for horrific fans that is sure to get you in the right mood. After an eerie opening, the score thunders in the last remaining minutes of "Ring Nebula" the way only the greats can do it. And "Species Feces" continues the trend with true shrieking atonality while "Milky Way Breasts" teases you, rather than kills you.
There's such a great quality about "Fever" that I can't hardly describe it. A James Horner usage of trumpet calls, a mysterious vocalization and a rhythmic tone make it too good to be true. "Safe Sex" doesn't go for the inevitable climax, despite the scene depicting otherwise and "Fever's Fever" just continues the trend of the previous "Fever" cue, and this with insanely interesting music.
And did I spot the Horner 4 note danger motif at the begin of "The Alien Underground"? If not, at least the luring dangerous path to take will not be an unlucky one, as the cold, atmospheric Aliens tones are creeping over the entire place. With "Worm Hole" and "Son of Sil" the creeping is now over, as we are out of time. Now the tone's tense, rhythmic & action packed (The Core & Aliens like).
Altogether, Species is an album that begins better than it ends. But Species is also an album that shows you one amazing surreal main theme, mixed with a couple of Young's over familiar (but excellent) horror moments. And now finally this one is available for everyone to enjoy. The main theme alone is a winner, but for those who think they've heard all they need to hear from the Space & Beyond compilation, there's surely some amazing alienating material here as well, enough for everyone to dream away about those milky way breasts ...
