Speed

Mark Mancina

" The career of Mark Mancina has begun "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Mark Mancina's first major score presented both a challenge and a serious test. This was the first student of Hans Zimmer to join the world, today a lot of them are called Zimmer clones alias the ones of the Media Ventures factory. Now factory isn't the word to use but Mark Mancina surely used back then Zimmer's strategy and scoring techniques. And later they would all develop in their own musical way. But back then the Mancina tone was Zimmeresque.

Speed will never be the milestone but it did set the name of Mark Mancina in the spotlights, while injecting energy into the career of a promising young composer. What has Speed got that we can not find today? Well not a lot that differs from the other Media Ventures action scores, but back then it was considered to be cool.

The main aspect of a score is the theme and here it is the main theme that does wonders for the movie. It is represented with heroism and speed in "The Rescue", with heartfelt emotion in "Helen Dies" or as a pseudo love theme in "End Title".

What happens next is the following. The begin rocks and the middle nags. Yet sequence these in the order they appear in the film and you have a much better listening experience. For example hear the way "Rush Hour", "The Gap" and "Helen Dies" are meant to be heard.

Sadly that doesn't take away the rest somewhat disappoints. But it doesn't disappoint to the brink that it takes the fun away. Speed keeps offering its fine moments and in the right order, you will enjoy it a lot more. Be attentive however for the fact that the song release and the score do seem alike. Unknowingly I picked up the song release first, and discovered that hearing a lot of songs I don't remember in the movie is apparently the right way to present Speed in general. In general, Speed is solid action music with several highlights and it generates a response, it delivers a pace and an energy. So now get into your car and try to see what will happen if you cross 50 mph.

Correct Order: (1 - 9 - 18 - 15 - 11 - 17 - 16 - 4 - 13 - 5 - 12 - 7 - 6 - 3 - 14 - 2 - 8 - 10 - 19)
