Super

Tyler Bates

" Not super, but acceptable! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Super goes about an everyday guy who transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though without any special heroic skills. Or basically Kick-Ass revisited in general. Anyway, whatever you think about the whole look-a-like scenario, Super was not greeted with the same critical response like Kick-Ass. For the music, Tyler Bates was chosen. Another name that doesn't get the general critical acclaim. On the contrary, the man always receives some of the biggest bashing of all. Reason why Super may not be super, but at least acceptable.

Yes Super is a song / score album that gets the job done. The songs vary from acceptable to at times good ("Calling all Destroyers", "It Hurts too Much" and "Let your Body Decides" are my favorites), but the real reason why I listened to this was because Bates created an acceptable score as well. In fact, it's at times very catchy. "Two Perfect Moments" is a catchy track with intriguing vocals, while a heroic score is heard over "Finger of God". However the best 2 tracks are the final ones. In "Libby Goes Down" we are greeted to the biggest heroic tale of all (this time with a dramatic tone), and in "Aftermath and Resolution" the musical tone from Kick-Ass turns up from time to time, without of course that amazing main theme.

Either way, Super doesn't hold a lot of Tyler Bates music to actually recommend it. I think for most of us that is actually a good thing, but Super doesn't hold anything remotely horrible. On the contrary, it's listenable and approachable, heightening I'm sure whatever scene it's underscoring. With the songs as extra bonus material (one can say the same about the score), Super is definitely a release that will interest some people. That is if those people ever saw the movie, liked what they saw and heard, and aren't afraid of actually listening to Tyler Bates' music for a change.
