The BFG

John Williams

" The BFG is NYTCJW Score (at first) "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Though it's not a score that will get in my top 30 list by Mr. Williams, it's a score from the master alright. And a recognizable one at that. If a non connaisseur (my girlfriend) could already pick out the style from one single track alone (she heard Harry Potter in it), then it shows that the world still needs John Williams, whether it's placed on the 31st place in the ranking or not. The BFG is full of wit and charm, playful fantasy music that for the trained Williams ear will be a playful reminder of all those scores that delivered this as well (Hook, Home Alone, Harry Potter), without that magical overflowing thematic quality that bonded those classics together. That's what's missing, not the charm, the creativity, the playfulness, nor the craftsmanship or the THEME, just the fluent melodic bind that used to hold it all together. Then again, for what's lacking there seems to be an awful lot still happening instead? For those that appreciate the positive above the negative.

Main theme is immediately identifiable and recognizable (and lovely when performed in full orchestral colors "Sophie's Future").
Influences are noticeable to other fantasy / family laden pictures (Harry Potter, Hook, Home Alone).
Leave it up to Mr. Williams to show the composers of today what detail and complexity means!
A score that grows the more you hear it, the more it moves towards the second part too.
Where do you hear so many woodwinds nowadays in a film score?
Still full of charm and emotion, whether playful or serious.
It's not like say the melody overtly flows over in this one.
Playful and energetic, but also a bit over the place as well (though it grows on you).
It's Not Your Typical Classic John Williams Score.
