The Debt

Thomas Newman

" Thomas Newman has a debt to pay "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

The Debt is the only movie Thomas Newman composed music for in 2010. It's an espionage thriller starring Hellen Mirren, Sam Worthington and Tom Wilkinson and features a typical score by Thomas Newman standards. Eclectic, dreamy, flighty, gritty, Thomas Newman like. From the piano moments in "Ghost Station" to the electronics that aid the string theme in "How to Die (Main Title)" to the more atonal attacks in "The Surgeon of Birkenau" to the long piano led "The Debt (End Title)", all in all this is acceptable stuff from Newman.

The more the album progresses, the more it transforms to a rougher sound too. And I can only assume that some part of the Bourne sound is responsible for that. It's cool to hear tracks like "An Unscheduled Stop" and "One More Parcel" from Thomas Newman, with its suspenseful tone coming awfully close to the Bourne sound of John Powell. Or how the one who influenced other composers with his American Beauty style suddenly has to use an influence from another composer.

I can't call The Debt classic Thomas Newman, nor can I call it inspirational Thomas Newman stuff. But I can sure listen to it. All his trademarks are present, and everything sort of clicks on the album. From a listening point of view, The Debt just works. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not as pretty or light as most of Thomas Newman's fare, but the ambiance works on a musical scale. Making The Debt just good enough for an occasional spin in the background.
