" Young composer Panu Aaltio shows a significant level of potential and wit in composing this piano and string driven score. "

Finland's contribution to the 2009 Academy Awards was The Home of Dark Butterflies, an adaptation of the award-winning novel with the same name, written by Leena Lander. The score is composed by the young Panu Aaltio, a frequent orchestrator on Tuomas Kantelinen's soundtracks and composer of the acclaimed score to Sauna. But when Tuomas Kantelinen's a man to look out for, what can be said about Panu Aaltio?

The score is an emotional journey through the minimalist voices of such experts as Michael Nyman and Philip Glass. But Aaltio infuses alongside the wonderful string lines an emotional and romantic connection with the piano, like heard in "Big Plans" where it brings forth a wonderful version on the main theme.

The light suspense during "Fever and Nightmares" is nothing but a distraction from the otherwise wonderful emotional journey. From here on the piano takes the lead again. During "Unwelcome Visit", we hear a later often occurring rise in the music, slightly reminiscent of Warcbeck's Proof. But if the piano is beautiful, then Aaltio's string writing is even more impressive. "The Butterfly Project" is simply gorgeous when it brings the main theme to life.

The piano version of the main theme in "Boys Decide to Stay", the distant "Juhani's Great Loss", the wonderful emotional urgency of the strings during "Memories in Water", the low cello and piano during "Jealous Christmas", "Alone" setting down an unnerving situation and the piano and string emotion performing a variation on the theme during the enticing "The Farewell", all of hem are tracks that linger in the mind because of their unique effect.

The piano play during "Spring Arrives" and the main theme version during "Glimpse of Happiness" are cannonballed out of the water by such emotional firecrackers like "The Past Revealed" and "Forgiveness".

If you're into soft whispers of emotional minimalism, you'll be at no better address than The Home of Dark Butterflies. Young composer Panu Aaltio shows a significant level of potential and wit in composing this piano and string driven score. Sure, there is one dominant theme and a motif as cornerstone to almost every track, but the deep emotion is what blew me away the most about this score. Once again MovieScore Media delivers, showing a hypnotic emotional gem that silences you with its story, and elevates you with its beauty.
