The Hurricane

Christopher Young

" Deep yet sober score by Christopher Young "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Christopher Young was for this kind of movie quite the stranger, the newcomer in town. Yet for another poignant drama Murder in the First he wrote a wonderful dramatic score, something he couldn't overdo for The Hurricane. This true tale about Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter, a former middleweight boxer who was convicted for a triple murder in a bar gets a deep yet restraint score from Young, a score fueled by deep emotional writing, yet sober in the drama. This score doesn't go overboard with the emotion, but lets mere the scenes do the talking. Solo vocals do add some poignancy to the music, but again never so abundant it becomes emotional. Therefore it's a score that loses your attention after a while, making it more the listen for the moments which are definitely there. Just a little more restrained than perhaps needed.

Solo vocals add a wonderful human emotion (like in "John Artis").
Covers some deep emotional writing, yet sometimes also some of his most restraint.
Perhaps too long, the score lasts just a tad too long.
The strength of a score that resembles this deep emotional drama (Murder in the First) is sadly not here.
