" A powerful entry in the ever increasing list of Screamworks Records "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release

The Innkeepers was a fairly enjoyable horror film about a haunted inn and the few remaining people who reside in it. Starring the ever lovely Sara Paxton, Pat Healy and Kelly McGillis, it saw director Ti West reuniting with composer Jeff Grace (Grace composed 3 of West's movies before that). Either way, considering it's horror territory Screamworks Records couldn't wait to continue the long fruitful collaboration with composer Jeff Grace (of whom they released all of West / Grace collaborations). Now The Innkeepers might not stray from the typical horror techniques, but when it's done right I don't care either.

Because let's face facts, how many people don't want their horror stories to begin with a good old orchestral whopper. "The Innkeepers" unleashes eerie flutes, mysterious strings and unnerving cello and brass, reminding you immediately that this stay will be one to remember. And remember you shall, considering it's delicious to discover true Poltergeist eeriness in "Claire's Room", bone chilling piano work in "Right Behind You" and "Special Memories" and nerve wrecking suspense in "The Garage" and "The Pendulum Breaks". Everything feels like we've been down that path before, but by far it's the one and only path that needs to be taken. Because nothing spells out horror better than an orchestra taking charge of it.

The Innkeepers is also quite melodic, housing longing atmospheric music, startling episodes and strong powerful stabs. Grace might not change the formula, but he does keep it above par. Because the underscore, aka the search for the haunting is one of melody. Grace keeps it soft and meandering yes, but strong of tone and not forgettable at all. Of course with these types of movies and scores, everything depends on how they tackle it once the really scary material is unleashed. And in that part the track "Claire Falls" doesn't disappoint at all. Of course it's here where the horror is finally unleashed, and it's in here where Grace can finally support it loud and big time. The mysterious motif (strings and piano) puts you at unease first, before the orchestra does the rest after that. Finally ferocious horror music at its best. Followed by memorable cello and Sings flutes in "Epilogue" and a rewarding culmination in "End Titles (Suite from The Innkeepers)".

Honestly, while the whole album is very enjoyable, horror music is still defined when it raises the hairs on your neck. And The Innkeepers keeps those goodies until the end. Showing not only a melodic side but also a rewarding one. Jeff Grace does everything right in the movie and on disc. A powerful entry in the ever increasing list of Screamworks Records.
