The Linguini Incident

Thomas Newman

" Jazzy Thomas Newman "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

The Linguini Incident goes about a frustrated magician, who is obsessed with becoming a modern female version of Harry Houdini. Starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette (the magician), it is a weird description for a movie that barely received attention at the time of its release. Thomas Newman, who made his big break several years before that with The Lost Boys and Jumpin' Jack Flash, composed the music, and Varèse Sarabande released it alongside the songs of Pray for Rain.

We know by now that Thomas Newman has always a surprise ready for you, and in the case of The Linguini Incident it is jazz. The delights of "Cruel, Cruel World", "Trigger Man", "Coney Island" and "Straight Jacket" with its jazzy rhythms on the piano and trumpet, the infectious combination of the dreamy Thomas Newman bells with a sassy trumpet in "Houdini's Bimbo", "Lethal Cleavage", "Platinum Bezel" and "Aquarium Escape", or the solo piano performing the theme in "Hanabera" and "Shut Up Pedro", everything about this score is perfect for background listening.

The final track "Many Happy Returns" even dares to throw in a delightful bouncy piece that delivers us (and I'll bet the viewers) a happy ending.

As said, you can always expect a twist when listening to Thomas Newman. And more often than not, it is the one thing you least expect. I wasn't expecting this when I started listening to The Linguini Incident. It's is not exactly a theme driven score to begin with, nor does it have those wonderful Thomas Newman string moments you'll find on almost every score of him. But it does make for an intriguing listening experience, if not in the least to hear those dreamy bells battling the sassy trumpet blasts. I'm sure it is a score for the fans of him who want something else instead, and aren't afraid of exploring some jazz music in the middle.
