The Parent Trap

Alan Silvestri

" Delightful score for 2 Lindsay Lohan's "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

It was just a remake of the highly successful movie The Parent Trap of 1961, and yet somehow most people remember this remake because of the first ever film role of Lindsay Lohan. For the music, director Nancy Meyers chose a veteran and someone she knew really well, namely Alan Silvestri (known for such family affairs as Father of the Bride, Richie Rich and Mouse Hunt to name but a few). Now knowing Silvestri can bring it both delightfully sweet and utterly bombastic, we knew he would succeed no matter what. And The Parent Trap is everything it needs to be, deviously sweet and delightfully charming.

Opening with a long suite, the 7 minute track introduces us to all the expected sounds and tunes. A typical sweet Alan Silvestri theme, a delightfully old fashioned jazzy melody, emotional vibes coming from the piano and guitar and the expected soaring finale (that's returning in the equally wonderful "Finale"). So there you have it, all that returns in the upcoming 16 tracks, covering all the main theme versions possible for you to discover, all the expected devious scheme music for you to experience, and all the lovely romantic interludes for you to melt with.

One word of advice though, there's a case of temp track in the track "Changes", and it definitely feels like Hans Zimmer of all people. But that aside The Parent Trap is so predictable, it's also so deliciously rewarding. Like Marc Shaiman and several others, Alan Silvestri can literally do no harm with this kind of schmaltz. And The Parent Trap is just so lovely in its effect, I don't mind it actually liking it that much at all. For those who like a good feeling whilst listening to their music, just think twice of Lindsay Lohan. Oh sorry, that came over badly ...
