The Red Pony admirers got 2 treats at the end of 2012. First the full soundtrack courtesy of Varèse Sarabande, then several tracks re recorded by The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, found as bonus cues on the re recording of Hour of the Gun. In general, it will be probably be more than you bargained for. Meaning, this release might hold the full music of the movie, it doesn't exactly offer the full scope (read sound) of it. The sound is (considering the era) quite nice, but it's still evident the recording isn't up to par. You'll occasionally hear the orchestra between takes ("True Love") or you'll have to raise the level of the sound so high hiss is starting to come through. Reason the re recording of The Red Pony became so much sought after. Speaking of quality, The Red Pony is quite pleasant. Lots of playful rhythms, lots of soft guitar and string music, and an overall positive attitude. "True Love" is quite nice with its gentle music for guitar and strings. Then again, when Goldsmith does unleash tension, it's immediately potent and cacophonic ("The Buzzards"). The nice "The Foal" closes things off in style. The Red Pony is a pure gift for completists, but for those who want less material but much better sound will do nicely with the tracks on The Hour of the Gun release. You pick, either way it's another solid and lovely entry of Jerry Goldsmith.
Most of the time, the score is quite upbeat and pleasant.
Several tracks are quite nice, including the re recorded cue "The Foal".
Even though its quite good, the sound quality could have been a bit better.
