Christopher Young

" the first of many nominations to come "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Christopher Young was in the spotlights with this one. The movie, an intelligent drama about starting over and forgetting the past was about to shook the floor of the Academy Oscars in 2001, with Kevin Spacey and the director Lasse Hallström as biggest contenders of the evening. Yet Julianne Moore was equally convincing and the music of Christopher Young equally respected by critics as fans. He perhaps didn't take an Academy nomination at home for his work, he at least received his first Golden Globe nomination, making up for the still unexplainable gap that Murder in the First left behind.

Still, the flair of this Irish ditty isn't to be ignored either and at least Young was on board a project that many could have scored in his place, simply because of the typecasting of Young as horror composer. Normally, Rachel Portman would have been expected (due to her collaborations with director Lasse Hallström), yet the choice fell to Young instead. And not one that let to disappointment because Young's Irish effort is a lovely listen containing Irish flair and emotional depth.

The opening track is one that you'll love instantly. The main theme is beautiful, emotional and holding that amazing Irish rhythm. The theme is reprized in "Killick-Claw Harbor", "Strictly Fishwrap", "Death Storm" and in the amazing "Sail On", where it receives first a touching guitar solo.

Furthermore, there's a catchy, relaxing quality to "The Gammy Bird" and a saddened quality surrounding the secondary theme in "Weather Rhymes". That secondary theme is reprized on gentle guitar in "One Kite Better and in "Alwyn Spires". And there's plenty of other stuff too. The Irish Jig in "Dutsi Jig", the more urgent main theme variation in "Seal Flipper Pie", the dreamy "Asleep with the Angel" or the somewhat emotional dark "Dog on Fire".

Sadly there's still a big difference between what begins and ends the score, and what surrounds this. Christopher Young only pushes the boundaries in that begin and finale track, in between the score listens more subdued and relaxing. In the end it gives you a nice free flowing listening experience, but also one where the mind takes you somewhere else occasionally. And that's sad because there's so much to love here. Irish music is always lovely to hear, but when mixed with the amazing strings it is heaven you taste. So The Shipping News is definitely worth it, alone for that amazing main theme.
