The Trouble With Angels

Jerry Goldsmith

" The lightheartedness with Goldsmith "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

The colorful, the playful, the bouncy, hell the young ambitious Jerry Goldsmith is now available in stereo. The Trouble with Angels is one dating back 50 years and more, but thanks to Intrada it's now available in good sound quality. The short original album that is. The complete version is in mono, but Goldsmith fans will already be happy with the original 28 minute release. And in this release it's evident how Goldsmith was creative, daring and funny. Funny because it's his tone that matches the shenanigans on screen. Through "church" bells, organ, flutes and drums he sets the tone and the pace of the film. Like The 'Burbs 25 years later, Goldsmith was never afraid to put a little humor in his music. Even the whistles rolling at the end of the cues are proof of that. The color comes indeed from the marching band tunes and its never ending playfulness. And the occasional "serious" cues do deliver Goldsmith at his more soft dramatic. Ah The Trouble with Angels in fun, but never a classic or a must have. No for that it lacks his thematic approach and his masterful writing. But it's still a fun background listen. And of course die hard Goldsmith fans will appreciate it a bit more than others. But again, there are other "unreleased" classics out there who deserve just a bit more stardom than this one.

Playful and harmless, Goldsmith creates a happy environment.
The sound quality is really good.
Of course no classic. It's not the next gem of Goldsmith's career.
