The Witches of Eastwick

John Williams

" You want the devil? You can't handle the Devil! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

The Witches of Eastwick was a fairly entertaining movie starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. It goes about 3 women who have been seduced by a mysterious man, until they begin to understand who or what that man truly is. Containing magical moments and nice special effects, the women take the fight to the end with John Williams' supportive score. And Williams was in the 80's on probably his most productive time of all. The Witches of Eastwick is not one of his best, but carries still all of his delicious trademark maneuvers. Not the least his amazing ability to come up with memorable themes.

That main theme gets a devilish concert arrangement in "The Dance of the Witches" and "End Credits (The Dance of the Witches Reprise)", showing you a fun over the top zany piece that made my neck hair grow in the trailer of Hook (at the time I didn't know where it came from). And zany the score is, because Williams likes to make his violins dance deviously in "Maleficio", go over the top with "Daryl's Secrets", do air tricks in the flighty and utterly fun "The Tennis Game" or make one throw up in "Have Another Cherry". His excellent film version of the main theme in "The Ride Home" is another fun moment in the score.

Besides the zany material, Williams can be utterly magical too. In "The Seduction of Suki and the Ballroom Scene" he goes from mere flutes to a stunning dance theme like only he could bring. And one must surely bring up the action music with extra organ and atonal flutes in "The Destruction of Daryl", enough to blow the roof off.

This proves it, Williams could unleash magic upon any project he worked on. A wonderful devilish main theme and an utterly brilliant ballroom theme alone make the album worth it. So worth it that The Witches of Eastwick was reissued in 2006 by Collector's Choice Music. Of course it was sold out pretty quickly. But if you ever see it somewhere for a reasonable good price, don't hesitate to pick it up. These are still classic John Williams scores with a bunch of themes you'll love to listen to. Not just for the devil this one is.
