Though Brad Bird's movie wasn't a critical success, most people had good things to say about Giacchino's music. And in a way they're right. Glad to hear proper music, with attention to detail, complexity and enjoyable themes. And even though it's not the Giacchino I wish to hear (Medal of Honor style), at least Tomorrowland is not so troublesome for me as Jupiter Ascending. What's going for Tomorrowland is the build up and performance of the rather spectacular theme (the trumpets do it for me), a mix of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme of Graeme Revell and the notes of Giacchino's own Operation Market Garden theme of MOH: Frontline. And in it's full scale performance ("Pin-Ultimate Experience", "What an Eiffel", "Pins of a Feather" and "End Credits"), it surely is spectacular. Some softer versions (for instance "Electric Dreams") are noticeable too.
The rest is a combination of pleasurable underscore and occasional chaotic action / suspense music. Not all my cup of tea, but the attention to detail makes up for that. For instance "Edge of Tomorrowland", "All House Assault" and "The Battle of Bridgeway" (watch out for the brief Rocketeer influence in the last one). All in all, it's been an amazing summer for Giacchino admirers, and Tomorrowland is surely one of his most pleasing results. Though the main theme versions return mostly in the same form and order, the end results remain always spectacular. Perhaps too long for repeated listens, Tomorrowland nonetheless remains a breath of fresh air if you compare it with most scores of this year.
