Top Gun

" Maverick: I thought of being an instructor here, sir. Strickland: God help us! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

I feel the need, the need for speed. You guessed it! Top Gun aka one of the 80's most biggest hits. It made of Tom Cruise the dream god of many teenage girls, made of Kelly McGillis an unwanted sex symbol, and of Tony Scott the director we know today. Back then it made 180 million dollars at the box office, and you can't compare those numbers with today's winnings. Luckily, back then songs and score fluently mixed between each other to give you soundtracks worthy of the praise top soundtrack.

I'm sure a couple of millions were also sold of Top Gun the original soundtrack, because today it stands as one of the ultimate examples of songs used in a motion picture. A couple are today known as THE song of Top Gun, and all of them present that gun ho, cool and romantic tone the movie creates from the beginning. THE song that stands for Top Gun is the love ballad "Take my Breath Away", sung by Berlin and the romantic ballad that made teens dream they were in the arms of Tom Cruise instead of McGillis.

But the gun ho attitude of the pilots was also reflected in the songs of Loggins, Loverboy, Cheap Trick and Marietta. Each song is a destined classic for the Top Gun fanatics, and no one is left behind when we praise the soundtrack qualities of Top Gun, whether it is the ultra cool "Danger Zone" and "Mighty Wings" or the typical 80's coolness in "Lead Me On", "Hot Summer Nights", "Through the Fire" or "Destination Unknown", each song is equally strong alongside one another.

Harold Faltermeyer is remembered today for his Beverly Hills Cop theme, but it must be said that the theme of Top Gun is equally enjoyable. The expanded soundtrack that was released years after the original soundtrack covers one extra cue of Faltermeyer, and it is the much requested solemn piece "Memories". The songs included as bonus tracks aren't of the same standard, but are either legendary ("Great Balls of Fire") or nostalgic ("You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"). It would have been fun for the fans of the movie to have the version sung by Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards as well as bonus material.

One score track doesn't make a soundtrack, and nor does it judges a bad or good rating. But Top Gun is remembered today as the song soundtrack, not the score soundtrack. The songs are unconsciously connected to the scenes of the movie, like good music ought to do, and Top Gun would not be the same without them. Luckily Harold Faltermeyer's enjoyable main theme gets a recognition alongside that stunning material of the 80's, when men dared to go faster, bolder and quicker past that control tower.
