Two Brothers

Stephen Warbeck

" Charming family adventure gets the right tone from composer Stephen Warbeck "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

From director Jean-Jacques Annaud comes Two Brothers (or Deux Frères), a heartwarming tale of 2 brotherly tigers, torn apart by the death of their mother. One falls into the hands of a lovingly young child, the other is trained to become the deadly animal he is born to be. And together, they are searching for the one thing they had in common, each other.

Director Jean-Jacques Annaud already worked with animals before, namely in his charming movie L'ours. And besides that, he has worked with the most prominent composers in the business as well, namely Philippe Sarde, James Horner and John Williams. Now we can add Stephen Warbeck to that list. Warbeck, known for his dramatic period scores suddenly received the chance to flex his muscles in the family and adventure genre.

And Warbeck didn't disappoint. Two Brothers is a charming, dramatic and adventurous score. There's a lovely main theme for the 2 cups in "The Two Brothers", wondrously in "In the Forsest", emotionally laden in "The Raft", sweet in "Aidan & Kumal" and absolutely delightful in "To Freedom" (whistling). The beautiful version in "Return to the River" and its wonderful finale in "Goodbye" are the icing on the cake.

There's another theme as well, a dramatic theme that returns a lot, including in "The Raft", "The Hunt" (though mixed in between a bit of comedy), softly but beautifully with woodwinds in "Goodnight Story" and perfect in 'Sangha the Outcast". The main theme and dramatic theme are paired together in "Kumal & Sangha", showing they work perfectly together as well.

But there's a significant amount of adventurous music in Two Brothers as well. For instance the thundering "The Search for Kumal" explodes near the end with percussive thunderous delight, there's the amazing heroic potent "Chasing the Truck" (based on the main theme), infusing the first part of "The Tiger Broken" and the amazing send off is in "Through the Flames. The brass here will show you Warbeck at his best. Terrific.

Altogether, Two Brothers is the typical dramatic family movie for young and old, and yet it is more than that. It is harsh at times as well (especially for young kids) and it will make sure you'll cry more than once. Working perfectly alongside of that is Stephen Warbeck's charming score, holding the right doses of drama and adventure in one satisfying listen. It holds 2 loveable themes and a couple of impressive adventure cues, making sure Two Brothers is definitely worthy of that cuddly attention.
