Unlawful Entry

James Horner

" Head the warning bell, this is forgettable James Horner material "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Unlawful Entry (starring Kurt Russell, Ray Liotta and Madeleine Stowe) goes about a couple who get help from a patrolling policeman after a break-in. However the more the cop starts spending time with the couple, the more they realize he might want more than what they bargained for. Jonathan Kaplan's movie received help from James Horner (who worked on Project X for the director before that). But may I immediately remind you, this is nothing like Project X, and I don't think I can easily think of a score that's similar to this. I mean Unlawful Entry might deliver the perfect suspenseful and 'being watched' soundscape for the film, on disc it makes for difficult listening.

The opening track might deliver a relaxing environment for piano and saxophone, it's definitely the calm before the storm. Because unsettling piano, synthesized suspense (which was already noticeable in the first track) and aggressive percussion take charge after that. "Intruder" and "Being Watched" have to be seen as acceptable yet average, "Leon's Death" has to be seen as disturbing and rather ugly. It's definitely effective but hardly material you'll enjoy listening to. And what's definitely noticeable, James Horner makes the experience cold, disturbing and unsettling without breaking a sweat.

A warning is at its place to. It's clear the tone of the film is responsible for this, and the cold sound of the synths does deliver an experience on its own. But that doesn't make Unlawful Entry specifically necessary fan material as well. The 11 minute "Pete's Decision" is everything we heard before that. From the piano theme to the cold constant unsettling atmosphere to constant returning unfavorable synthesized suspense, this cue is definitely one that forgets to say: James Horner magic. In truth, one can not criticize Unlawful Entry too much, as it does everything the film tries to do. It's also a score that doesn't have James Horner copying himself (which can be considered a good or a bad thing). But the synthesized tone is a desired taste, and the score itself lacks gripping musical taste, making Unlawful Entry one to pass.
