No, it doesn't. It wasn't written for any specific scene.

I think the flipside of the argument that 'Roar!' isn't even remotely a score is that it means all end credits sequences aren't score (unless by some qualification that they must have started in the film). Some very good babies get thrown out with that bathwater, including all those superlative concert arrangements that really a lot of great scores into listenable album territory. I agree they're not Oscar-able, but those awards are so beneath contempt that the real question should simply be whether they're award-worthy.

And to think MICHAEL CLAYTON and SANTAOLALLA was Oscar-able biggrin
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Akira Ifukube's ROAR is my top track this year! punk wink

No it wasn't! We all know it was an Ifukube-sounding piece, but that doesn't take away the fact that it's a great piece of music by Giacchino.

Here are my favorite tracks from 2008, not in any particular order:

"Hellboy II Titles" - Hellboy II (Danny Elfman)
"Dogs" - Standard Operating Procedure (Danny Elfman)
    "Roar!" - Cloverfield (Michael Giacchino)
"The Adventures of Mutt" and "Finale" - Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (John Williams)
"The Island", "Under the Knife" & "Ocean's Apart" - Lost: Season 3 (Michael Giacchino)
"Fox in Control" - Wanted (Danny Elfman)
"Harvey Two-Face" - The Dark Knight (James Newton Howard feat. Hans Zimmer smile)
"Main Titles" - The Happening (James Newton Howard)
"The Dreaming" - Age of Conan (Knut Avenstroup Haugen)
"Tragic Story of Rex Racer", "True Heart of Racing", "Casa Cristo", "Go Speed, Go!", "32 Hours", "Grand Ol' Prix", "Reboot" & "Let Us Drink Milk" - Speed Racer (Michael Giacchino)
    "RA3 Theme - Soviet March" - Red Alert 3
"You're My Brother" - Tropic Thunder (Theodore Shapiro)
"Time to Get Out" & "Target Terminated" - Quantum of Solace (David Arnold)

As you probably can see, "Speed Racer" was my favorite score of the year, and it was very difficult to pick my favorite tracks, because they're ALL good! smile

BTW, I listen to a lot of game music as well, so a couple of game tracks got on my list aswell. My apologies! smile

I do like the maintitle from Largo Winch
    listen to more classical music!

    • CommentTimeDec 19th 2008
Is it just me, or does the first track of Largo Winch not ''feel'' like a main title track. It would be like having "I'm The Money" from Casino Royale starting the album.

I like me re-arranged playlist better, having Nerio's Theme at the beginning and introducting the above track part the way through.

I'm going to add "Long Live Sacred Germany" from Valkyrie by John Ottman to the list.

So guys... can we conclude on what may have been the best piece of the year? I haven't counted, but I see a lot of votes on "Roar!" and "Succes Montage" smile
  1. Hmm, good question.

Thing is I can't remember all of 2008's cues. Not all of my 2008 scores are tagged as 2008 scores, so I can't just search for them and pick out my favourites.

Answer to the question is... I just don't know!?

It's bloody annoying since I'm far too lazy to trawl through the albums trying to remember which of them are from 2008.

Fuck it. It'll just have to remain a mystery.

Why not fix the tags once you import them into iTunes. It only take a few minutes. I mean, I have far less free time than you do and I can still manage to keep my music organized. wink

Pah! Organised schmorganised! I'm living on the edge!!

(Though I will try to remember that for next time. Thing is, you figure once you tag one album, you've gotta tag the rest... ahhh....)
  2. The finale cue of CHE (Alberto Iglesias), 'La Higuera, October 9, 1967', is probably the cue that stands out most to me.

Indeed, that's a clear winner as one of the top pieces of the year, imo.

Also, i am deeply impressed by Moviescore Media's LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (Johan Söderqvist). It contains some small-scale and emotional but truly unique pieces, like "Eli's Theme" and "Let the Right One In".

"With Sympathy" from Steve Jablonsky´s Gears of War 2.

One of the most dramatic cues I´ve heard this year.
