As my friend Joep has said often: Mr Hisaishi truly is the John Williams of Japan.

I think the analogy that Hisaishi is the John Williams of Japan is a good one. I just got my first CD which is a new release on Milan. It contains work from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. It is a nice compilation/introduction to his fine work. I especially like the Nausicaa.listen to more classical music! -

Indeed. I was always amazed by the ability of a lot of people to overlook such musical magic as Hisaishi's, though.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

I've always dismissed this post, but I looked Cristian's original message, and I didn't realise this guy did Howl's Moving Castle. That score rules! -

On August 4 and August 5, Tokyo's Nippon Budokan complex will host a concert program of music pieces created by Studio Ghibli's Joe Hisaishi for the films directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Hisaishi will participate in the concert, accompanied by a 200-piece orchestra and 400 chorus singers. The event, titled "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea Movie Opening Commemoration" will commemorate 25 years of cooperation between Miyazaki and Hisaishi. The two began working together in 1983, when Hisaishi wrote the music for the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind movie image album. Hisaishi went on compose the scores of every one of the full-length films that Miyazaki directed since then, and pieces from all of them will be featured.
This concert is happening during my visit to Japan. Definitely going to try my absolute hardest to attend this concert!!!!

Well, I'm going to be there for most of July and some of August to visit my brother who teaches English over there. And I meant to post the interview with Hisaishi where I first got the info about the concert, but got a little excited and forgot. Here it is. -

Couldn't agree more. Hisaishi is easily one of the most gifted composers out there today. I was listening to the 2 albums for THE FOUR KINGS and the whatever its title is, i always forget, and GOD a concert with stuff like that would just be a dream coming true!
We expect a full report!Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Although I'm not going to be able to attend the concert, I did go see Miyazaki's new film the other day, which of course had a Hisaishi score. I bought the album about a week ago in Kyoto. It's a great album with a lot to offer from tender string and and woodwind passages to swashbuckling. -

I feel like I read somewhere that Hisaishi wasn't happy with his main theme for Ponyo. This was a long time ago and maybe he changed it. Does anybody know if I completely imagined this? -

Oh, it was on tv? No wonder I've had trouble finding a DVD. I've been looking the past two days trying to see where I could buy this to go with his Nine Cellos and a Piano concert. -
