  1. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    VAMPIRES VS. LYCANS –
UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS UNCOVERS THE ORIGIN OF THE FEUD

Original Score by Paul Haslinger to be released by Lakeshore Records

(February, 2008- Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the original score for UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS available digitally (iTunes and Amazon Digital) and in stores on February 3, 2009. The film is the prequel to the 2003 film Underworld and its 2006 sequel Underworld: Evolution. It features score by Paul Haslinger (While She Was Out, Vacancy).

Grammy-nominated composer Paul Haslinger was classically trained in Salzburg and Vienna. In Vienna he began exploring the new domain of electronic music. He auditioned for and became a member of the pioneering group Tangerine Dream. During his five-year tenure with the group, Tangerine Dream released four albums and collaborated on several film projects including Miracle Mile, Near Dark, and Canyon Dreams.

After Tangerine Dream, Haslinger continued his work as a solo artist. He honed his film scoring skills as the programmer for composer Graeme Revell on Blow, The Negotiator, Siege, and Tomb Raider. In 2000, Haslinger composed the score for director John Stockwell’s Cheaters. Since then they have collaborated on Crazy/Beautiful, Blue Crush, and Into the Blue. Haslinger’s film credits include: While She Was Out, Vacancy, Shoot Em Up, Crank, Underworld, The Girl Next Door, and The Italian Job.

UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS delves into the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires, known as Death Dealers, and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). A young Lycan, Lucian (Michael Sheen), emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has persecuted them for hundreds of years. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, the beautiful vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle to free the Lycans from their brutal enslavement.

Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment present UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS in theaters nationwide on January 23, 2009. UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS original score on Lakeshore Records will be available via iTunes, Amazon Digital and in stores on February 3, 2009. Also available from Lakeshore Records are the soundtracks and score albums for UNDERWORLD and UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION and the soundtrack for UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS.

I'm guessing this is a synth score?

It sounded mixed to me but couldn't bear more of it to actually pay more attention. But most aimportantly (and no surprisingly) it is a crap score.

at which point did you expect a good score?
I knew it would suck from the very first moment it was made (I mean with that the score)

You have to, someone can always spring a massive surprise.

An example for me would be Graeme Revell's Red Planet.

Yeah, to be fair Revell has done a few scores I really enjoy but on the whole I'm not excited by any new releases from him.

Yeah, most of the times the films he gets assigned to are horrible, although very few people have the gift of making excellent scores for really crappy movies. See Goldsmith. Or Chris Young.

I went to the official soundtrack site, and there was SOME good stuff (esp. in that gritty indie-meets-industrial mode that was the thing in the 90's....you know, like Prodigy), but yeah - not the best music I've heard. I couldn't find any Haslinger tracks there, though. Is that on a separate soundtrack?

It's not Haslinger's crappy synthy cheap-sounding score. It's on this song-filled soundtrack CD

A remnant from the joy that is Beltrami's Underworld: Evolution!

I suppose that since this new movie is a "prequel" the makers went back to Haslinger for the same sound he produced for Underworld? I was watching Underworld: Evolution again the other day - love the movie with all that great music.

I found a copy of the original Underworld score going cheap and I'm awaiting the arrival of that CD.

I still don't understand what you mean. There is no Haslinger on that CD that you're linking to. Just the various artists that were also on the official soundtrack site above.

I'm still looking for somewhere to hear the Haslinger score, as it may very well be my cup of tea (I know we don't see eye to eye on that genre).

The music you've heard on the site, are you sure it's from Haslinger's score? I assumed it was one of the artists contained on that soundtrack cd.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate" smile

    Recap:

Here was a promotional post for what was apparently a new Haslinger score. I read it, and the following responses also seemed to be about the Haslinger score. I then clicked the links in the first post, but they all led to the official soundtrack site with SONGS BY VARIOUS ARTISTS, not Haslinger's score.

So I was confused. WHERE is Haslinger's score to be heard that you're all talking about?!?
    I am extremely serious.

There are some of us who have been predicting the rise of the lichens for far too long. Why was nothing done to stop it? I blame Gordon Brown.

    Ah, NOW we're talkin'! Thanks.

To be honest, I liked what I heard there. Nothing "cheap synthy" about it, IMO. Quite sophisticated textures, definitely not altogether "Remote Control". But then again, I'm a big fan of Tangerine Dream and even the members' solo work, so I'm totally biased. Some of the percussive riffs had a definite BABYLON 5 / Franke-feel.

I also liked what I heard. But then again as a composer wannabe I'm a sucker for soundtracks with a lot of sound design elements. And I recognized some of the sample libraries used on the soundtrack (which is a geeky hobby of mine dizzy )

That's true, but there are many TD elements that the members have brought with them into their solo work. The percussive riffs, those "swishing" and "swoshing" things, a general "organic" or "acoustic" feel. Seems like both Franke and Haslinger, in particular, like those.

There's nothing organic nor acoustic in Haslinger's work, imo, but if you like what he's doing, then no problem with me wink

Of course, I'm using "acoustic" in a different sense, since electronics are not usually thought of as acoustic and "un-plugged". But like Kraftwerk, these guys knew how to let the various electronic sounds flow in and out, almost like instruments in an orchestra. It feels very authentic and real, unlike the dime-a-dozen Remote Control carbon copy (I love the RC/MV sound, but like all sounds, you have good representatives and poor representatives without originality). But the TD guys are completely different and do their OWN thing. Which I love.
    I am extremely serious.
