The Film Music Festival in Krakow, organized by the Krakow Festival Office and the RMF Classic radio station, is dedicated in its entirety to music created for the purposes of cinema. The event’s unique character has been achieved through a combination of the highest quality interpretation of film music, performed by leading musicians and orchestra, and a high quality film show. The main aim of the event’s program is to present a variety of genres: from retrospectives and exclusive gala concerts, through monographic concerts of chosen renowned film music composers to mass open-air shows on Krakow’s Błonia field, one of Europe’s largest historic green areas, located in the very city centre. The monumental film and music shows are particularly popular among viewers. This is mainly due to spectacular production, innovative technology of sound and image, as well as excellent performances and the highest artistic levels of presentation. This is due to the presence of the most prominent artists and composers. Because of the almost unlimited capacity of the Błonia field, there are no other shows of this kind in Europe.

The Film Music Festival arouses huge interest among the film community. It has been organised to take place just after the Cannes Film Festival and has attracts to Krakow the contemporary world music, culture and film elites, as well as cinema and film art lovers.

The Festival is part of the “6 senses” promotional project of Krakow’s cultural life, which is related to the development plans of the Regional Film Fund in Krakow and the promotion of an image of Krakow as an infrastructurally and artistically complete city in order to effectively attract film creators to take advantage of the Małopolska region’s audiovisual value. This is why one of the main assumptions of the Festival is to consolidate composers’ and film and music artists’ circles through long lasting film and music projects (i.e. collaboration with the Columbia Artists Management and Howard Shore in the presentation of all parts of Peter Jackson’s trilogy with live music, collaboration with the RMF Classic radio station, the Fimucité Film Music Festival of Tenerife, Sinfonietta Cracovia orchestra, the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow, Studio in Alwernia, Gremi Film Production and so on). The idea behind this event is to promote the program of film culture and film music popularization which is widely awaited in numerous Polish and foreign artistic circles. The special guest of last year’s season of the Festival was Eric Serra. This year Krakow will be visited by, among others, Tan Dun, Reinhold Heil, Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Jan A.P. Kaczmarek.

In 2008 the Film Music Festival was nominated for the Niptel Media Award for its innovative character. The Academy praised the organisers for having the courage to create an event of an international character and level, as well as an interesting and skilful presentation of film music, which evokes curiosity, interest and admiration among both younger and older audiences at the festival. The Festival was also chosen as “Event of the Year” by the Muzykafilmowa.pl portal gathering film music fans, journalists and critics. The Festival has also gained the recognition of the European Commission and in consequence received funds from the European Regional Development Fund operational programme.
