    Nathan first score was for Rian Johnson's first movie, Brick. Composed using one microphone with a Macbook Pro.

    Now, he's done his cousin's new movie, The Bloom Brothers. And Dave Chen from SlashFilm.com has an interview with him. It's a long one, at 50minutes, with some samples interspersed between the conversation.

    I gotta say Brick superbly captured the spirit of the movie in a very inventive, original score. The Brothers Bloom seems to be another original one, though the sound is less of my liking, probably. I might enjoy it more after having seen the film, though.

  5. Being a "unique sound" perhaps run the risk of not being universally appreciated.

    I haven't "got" anything of his I have heard yet.

  10. Hi all,

    Craig Lysy, Oscar Flores and I met up with composer Nathan Johnson in Silverlake in Los Angeles tonight, and presented him with his IFMCA Award, which he won for "Breakthrough Composer of 2012" for his score for Looper.

    Nathan is a really nice guy, very interesting and in-tune with the contemporary film music world. He was telling us how he was influenced by John Williams, Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota as a kid, and is really looking forward to broadening his horizons as he gets more work. We also had a quite in-depth and philosophical conversation about changes in technology and the way it affects the creative spark, and how he thinks everyone should take a year-long break from work every seven years!

    He's a very cool guy, and I hope he gets some interesting movies to score going forward.
