Film composers Simon Boswell and Stefano Mainetti have both been involved in an unusual and currently much talked-about project where new (non-film) music has been written for an album called “Alma Mater: Music from the Vatican.” The album features the voice of Pope Benedict XVI as well as the Choir of the Philharmonic Academy of Rome conducted by Pablo Colino and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Boswell and Mainetti, who are joined by Nour Eddine, contributed eights original compositions to the album, which will be released on November 29 by Geffen Records. As well as writing for Alma Mater, Mainetti and Boswell have also been involved with the album’s music arrangements and production.

Interesting project indeed! I agree with that editorial note about Simon Boswell wink
I like Stefano Mainetti. His score for 3 seasons of Italian TV series Orgoglio is just fabulous. I'll get this.

It's a period epic. The music is appropriately grand and sweeping. But there are lots of intimate moments scored for oboe/flute backed by piano and strings (isn't that a very Italian trait? Pino?). I like the 2nd season better since it has longer cues that develop things better.
The cds are still available for cheap on the Warner Chappel Music Italy label. Intermezzo Media has the 1st season (78 min of score) for Eur 6.50. Good deal!

Thanks! I guess it's on the more melancholic, emotional side of things?

Not much melancholy. More emotional and love themes.
I have my cds in disarray. If I can locate this I'll send a sample.

Hmmm....reminds me a bit of Jean Michel Jarre's concert in Lyon in 1985, where John Paul II opened with a blessing (he was watching from a nearby cathedral). This can be heard on the CITIES IN CONCERT CD.
    I am extremely serious.
