It certainly is worth visiting for some in-depth film scoring discussions. The trouble is finding the interesting stuff in amongst all the people/music bashing. It's certainly where I get the bulk of my "hard" film music information.

Same here. It's far more difficult to have a joke there too, certain people can be very touchy.

I get the feeling that were Sunil to join FSM, it would be like a lamb to the slaughter? (A not-so-innocent lamb at that.)

I hope I'll be able to listen to most of the 2009 scores in the next few days. I've only listened to Cheri, Puccini, Mao's Last Dancer, Tetro and Die Papstin. They're all fine scores.

I did get back to score listening after a long break and really like the Barsotti and Golijov.
  1. TETRO was particular wasn't really given much attention. I think more people knew about YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH two years ago? (Although that was also under-heard.)

Here is an interesting article about this year's potential award nominee scores with comments by the composers.

Thanks for that, great article! beer
  2. It is a great article.
It's a slight shame to see that of all things, it's JULIE/JULIA and FANTASTIC MR FOX that are getting the marketing push for Desplat. Both are great, but both feel a bit lightweight next to his work on CHERI or COCO CHANEL or UN PROPHETE.

I definitely agree with Michael that one of the best film music moments from 2009 is the main title in Star Trek. That little motif before the big bold statement of the main theme is just, well, perfect. A fantastic experience in the cinema!

Like Anthony, I'm struggling to think of 10 scores from this year: Up, Avatar, A Christmas Carol, Un Homme Et Son Chien, Terminator Salvation. Um... something else.... I dunno. Star Trek and Avatar are the ones battling it out for my No.1 score from 2009.

The best releases, for me, are without a doubt Back To The Future and Wrath of Khan - I didn't even have to stop and think about that one!

No Baaria, No Agora? No A Single Man? Twilight: new moon? Look at Michael's lists; there's much more great scores than simply 10.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

When you've been there long enough ( and I've been there a long time ) you do get to know people, the good and the bad, and I think I can honestly say the vast majority is good though it is a shame that many of the older posters ( by that I mean those people that were posting regularly 10 years ago ) rarely if ever post anymore. And of course, there are people here that still post at FSM.

I've been there 3-4 years ago, and stayed for a couple, although not as densely as here. All i remember are those characters jumping down every thread with the same insults every time.

  3. My final cd package for the year came today, and within there was:
    - The Informant! (Marvin Hamlisch)
    - Marco Polo (Armand Amar) -- is this a film? I don't know. could be a stage production
Haven't heard either yet, but they look promising.
