French composer Erwann Kermorvant, who studied film composition at UCLA and combines a distinct Hollywood sound with his very own voice, wrote a grand symphonic score for the French sci-fi comedy Un ticket pour l'espace (known as A Ticket to Space in English). The orchestral scoring is playing the drama and action seriously in the veign of some of the great comedy scores by Elmer Bernstein and Maurice Jarre, and the music pays tribute to the great science fiction film scores by composers such as John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner.

Big romantic space music, great thematic material, some fun cinematic in-jokes, and ferocious action music for the giant mutant space turkey (!)... This score is too entertaining to be missed!

Our second release of rousing orchestral music by Erwann Kermorvant is, just like Un ticket pour l'espace a film produced by Gaumont. Big City is a rare film - a French western - and the composers took the opportunity to write a score that reflects the great musical heritage of the genre.

Featuring infectious themes (the main theme will undoubtedly appeal to fans of Aaron Copland, Alfred Newman and... Bruce Broughton), powerful action with an emphasis on pounding percussion, beautiful romantic writing - and a very charming waltz too - this is a rich and highly entertaining score. Welcome to enter the musical world of Big City and Erwann Kermorvant - you won't be disappointed!

    Track titles:
1 Once Upon the Time... 1.49
    2 This Means War! 1.35

I've only been listening to the clips, mind, but I was quite impressed with what I heard from this -to me unknown- composer.

Un Ticket Pour L'Espace seems to be a strong contender in the space epic genre, and offers a huge scale of sound and thematic work, Kermorvant clearly has taken his cues from the Williamses and the Goldsmiths of this world, and spins these into an original compsition of his own, that sounds powerful on every level.

However it's the clips for Big City that really blew me away: a rousing and intensely exciting take on the Americana western sound we know from Bernstein and Newman. Yes, there's a definite Silver Age tinge to it, but it's so fresh, so jubilant and unrestrained.

Both of them seem very good listens, and I for one will definitely purchase the Big City release.

  1. A Ticket To Space is a really enjoyable listen. I passed on Big City, it's a bit too Americana. I'd be interested to hear the opinion of anyone who has listened to the entire CD.

  2. One thing I was disappointed with then I opened A Ticket To Space was (and I'm sure I am in the minority) the jewel case. There was something about the nice glossy digipak that I loved about Mikael's releases.

A nice, differentiating touch sadly missed. sad

And before anyone says, yes I know it's the music that's the important thing!

My take on The Big City is a positive one but I think there is more of a Broughton influence on his material than any other composer. As you know I listen to a fair amount of Copland and really heard very little but I did hear similiar Silverado and Tombstone themes. Also a lot of fun material.

    listen to more classical music!
  3. I had a listen to the clips to The Big City but the combination of "western" and "fun material" is not a heady mix for me.

Apparently reading the synopsis of the movie does indicate the reason for the parody etc.

    Good review, Thomas.
Based on the clips I just ordered this score a couple of days ago, as it sounded really good to me (which is interesting, considering I actually do not care very much for the oft-cited Broughton as inspiration for this score).

thanks Martijn, in a way this score deserves an even higher rating, and it would have received this IF the tracks were longer, because it doesn't leave too much room for development. But it's definitely a good score, I'm looking forward to the other one now as well
