Yep, I'd agree on that. Of the commercial, mainstream director's, he's one of the top few who remains his own style and integrity (though there are always the G.I. Jane's).

True. Or MATCHSTICK MEN. Or A GOOD YEAR. But there's still lots of delicious Ridley style in them to savour.
    I am extremely serious.
  1. GI Jane has none, as far as I remember!

Ridley Scott is possibly the only director I recognize by the composition of close-ups. I could safely say that he's the only director who films Russell Crowe this way. It occured to me, when I saw a Gladiator-like shot in A Good Year (a movie I liked).

The only Scott films I don't like are:

    1. GI Jane, which I saw as a kid, but hardly impressed me, to be delicate.
    2. Hannibal, whcih i see as a failed pastiche. And what's shocking to me, It looks like Ridley lost any visual idea about the movie, when they left Florence - Italy is pure Scott beauty, America is a no-no. The over-the-top violence is the pastiche part of it, but I think he stopped somewhere halfway. Zimmer scored the pastiche.

  2. I haven't seen Legend and Someone to Watch Over me yet and I have no memory of 1492: Conquest of Paradise which I saw...

Oh, I do seem to remember some - the light through fans, the night&rain shots (especially when she's doing her final test with the gong thing), the colour-saturated image. But it's been quite a few years since I saw it last. It's a very entertaining film, although not exactly high art.
    I am extremely serious.
