With acclaimed scores such as the epic fantasy work Stardust, the classically elegant The Young Victoria and the recent action hit Kick Ass, British composer Ilan Eshkeri is quickly establishing himself as a major new name in film music.

His score for Neil Marshall’s new Roman/Celtic adventure, Centurion, is probably his most intense, adrenaline-pumping and relentlessly dramatic score so far – a large orchestral score, performed with precision and stamina by the London Metropolitan Orchestra recorded at Abbey Road. Interesting instrumental colours such as the highly unusual Scottish instrument, the Carnyx, and the Bodhrán, add a unique dimension to the score.

Eshkeri made extensive research of Celtic music before he began work on the actual writing, and based his thematic material on discoveries of old folk songs he made when listening to old BBC recordings from the furthest reaches of the British Isles. We are very proud to be working for the first time with Ilan and hope that this is only the first of many projects we’ll do together.

I'm not the biggest Eshkeri fan, but tracks like Centurion, The Ninth Ride Out (great motiv!) and We Are The Prey sound very interesting. Could be a good score, and I'm a sucker for these kinda things when done proper (I just hope those tracks flow a little into each other...).
  2. It lacks "soul" to me. It just sounds like generic Immediate Music trailer music piece after piece.

One watermelon I will be skipping. I wonder what Intrada has up their sleeves...

To be honest, there are certainly several soulless clips in there, but I'm hoping the interesting parts will outweigh them in the full score. Won't buy it immediately, but it's something to look out for.

Who's heard it, the whole thing? I loved his work for HANNIBAL RISING and i am looking for something quality-wise equal to that since.

I will be getting it in a couple of weeks and can let you know what it's like then, if nobody else does in the meantime.

Though, I am rather afraid after the despicable mess that was Ninja Assassin... angry
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

I've not had a chance to listen to it all the way through yet - I'm hoping to do that later. I'm certainly looking forward to hearing it.

Listened to it twice now...it's a kinda pleasant score for lovers of the genre. Somewhere in between of Prince or Persia and Robin Hood. There are themes in there but they need a bit of an effort in order to trace and understand. It's not as thematic or melodic as Prince of Persia but then again it's not the same style either, Centurion is a bit darker and rawer. More listening sessions and perhaps watching the very bloody and violent (From what i hear) movie might help me understand it better.

Does that mean there are zero "Excellent" tracks or did you stop doing that?

I never stopped doing that, so zero excellent tracks, for me of course
I think there are a couple that were candidates, but they all listened the same in the end

    'Kay.

(actually now that I think about it, my whole system of organizing my favorite music is sort of based on your system for "Excellent tracks", I remember it back when you used to have your own website! After I listen to each score a few times I pick my favorite tracks and I have a tag set up in my music player (foobar) that saves them and then automatically sends them to my ipod). Although I am probably a little more lenient than you in what counts as good enough. We will see if I think Centurion has any). beer

Hey bro, to actually think your 'Excellent track' system would help people to this extent, I guess you are surprised as I am?

And to get the excellent rating in Thomas' system the track has to really kick incredible ass all the way throughout. Only the most excellently brilliant cues get that rating.

But I'm usually much more lenient than him as well.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.

I like the promo thing MSM is doing at SAE, with the autographed sheet music. I really, really wish I was interested in this CD - unfortunately I'm not - but please keep actions like this up, I'm hoping I'll get lucky with one of your future CDs!

    hehe, good to know that

I think anyone will pick different tracks in the end, because it's all about personal taste

the reason why I place these excellent tracks is also to aid me in my search for the honest rating, it doesn't necessarily mean more excellent tracks means a higher rating, but it gives me an indication for a rating. So for me it's kinda like a help system

but I'm well aware that some base their own impression on it

anyhow, I'll use this system until the day I die, or stop writing which will be the same I think wink
so, if you don't see any excellent tracks that means there are none, for me smile

Just received it today from sae.

Quite unoriginal and Zimmer-esque but entertaining, at least more than HENRI IV or ROBIN HOOD. Congrats for the excellent looking release Mikael.
