Set during the first outbreak of the bubonic plague in England, Black Death is a dark horror adventure movie that features a highly original score by Christian Henson. In his third collaboration with director Christopher Smith, Henson (whose scores for The Secret of Moonacre and Triangle are also available from MovieScore Media) has created a sonic world that fuses a modern approach to film scoring with a strikingly authentic sound.

Using modern instruments, including a guitar quartet, and unusual playing techniques such as singing through a traditional tuba or playing the violin in a “primitive” viol-like style, Henson has created one of the most original film scores we’ve come across in recent time.

Standout elements of the score is the contrast between relentless action and sparse melodic themes. A musical work filled with darkness, beauty and mystery. Not to be missed!

Film opens in UK cinemas on June 11 with international distribution to follow.

Has anyone else heard this? It's mysterious, raw, dark and creeps under your skin; it's long since i heard anyone approaching film like this, in the specific musical ways; It's not very thematic, at least not obviously and apart the repeated single 6-note long main theme on strings but it's got a very unique, experimental sound. Mesmerizing, atmospheric, ominous.

Haven't got this yet. I buy most of the MSM cd's but haven't tried any of the Henson discs so far for some reason.
    What's Triangle like?

Excellent review, I wasn't convinced from your first comments, but after reading the review I am completely convinced I should buy this one...

Very good review D and I'm definitely intrigued, I'll give the soundclips a listen later.

As I remember, the film had reasonably good reviews too.

Bear in mind that it's a really dark score. Don't expect anything 'symphonic' about it.

I like dark and I've never been purely symphonic music.
