......looking for the best specific on the music videos on dvd's out there so bring the lists up people! smile

  1. There is a pretty good one about the scoring, recording, ... proces of Bear McCreary for the series Battlestar Galactica. It's called 'Evolution of a cue' and it gives you insight in how much he accomplishes in so little time. It litterally shows you the process from bear seeing the episode, coming up with ideas, orchestrating them, recording the musicians, ... the whole nine yards... It's on the Season 4 DVD box of Battlestar Galactica (4.5).

In box 4.0 there is a parody 'making of the music', which doesn't tell you anything about the process, except that Bear has a great sense of humor.

I'm sure you know about the pretty interesting Zimmer featurettes on:

    - Gladiator
    - Hannibal
    - Black Hawk Down
    - Matchstick Men (very frank on the many frustrations between composer and director - you can see why this was their last project together).

Also, Desplat talks about his music on the BluRay (and DVD?) of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Powell on The Bourne Supremacy...

Also pretty original is the video diary by Michael Giacchino's son, made by request of Brad Bird, during the writing and recording of Ratatouille, as found on the BluRay of the film. It's cute, but don't expect to go too deep into the music wink.

I'm talking about the region 2 DVD's, but as we never get bonus features that aren't on the R1's, I'm sure those will have 'em as well (we may even be lucky if we get those!).

    I'll look those links up...

Go no further than the brilliant 1980 making of the music documentary for The Empire Strikes Back.

I also really like James Horner's open and honest featurette on the making of Aliens and The Wrath of Khan.

Oh, and did you know about the Easter egg on Hannibal? It's a montage set to the song Clarice, written, sung and produced by Marc Streitenfeld. Not in the style of the film AT ALL, but I really liked it nonetheless.

Great docu, i've seen it before, crappy sound though.

If everyone, like Erik, has youtube links (or anything else similar) it'll be greatly helpful! The lists are great too, i'll have to look those dvd's up smile

I have no idea whether this documentary will be excellent, but it will be included on the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Ultimate Edition DVD & Blu-ray released this fall. "Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 4: Sound & Music" will have interviews with the sound designers and new ones with Williams, Doyle, Hooper and Desplat respectively.

According to the reviews below, the most recent US DVD releases of Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle In The Sky, My Neighbor Totoro has an interview section called Scoring Miyazaki (7:19), featuring Joe Hisaishi.

Anything with HARRY GREGSON WILLIAMS' scores for TONY SCOTT or any other RIDLEY SCOTT musical features that you know of?

    thanks

  2. Hannibal, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down have score featurettes.

Most recent Ridley Scott DVD releases (2-DVD collector editions) usually have a very comprehensive documentary on the whole filmmaking process and usually the post-production chapter does discuss the score. The only one I remember not discussing the score was Gladiator.

You could also check director commentaries, but it's hit and miss, really. At the end of Man on Fire commentary, Tony Scott discusses the music in an interesting way.

Zimmer told me once that they aren't working together only because of scheduling conflicts. Hans was asked to score Kingdom of Heaven.

the director's cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN has a featurette about the scoring process. the SINBAD dvd has also a making of, where harry talks about his score.

    about other composers:

Music from the film SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON - Hans Zimmer & Bryan Adams (10 minutes)
Scoring a sequel - Trevor Rabin (5 dvd set of NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS) (6 minutes)
Creation of the film score - Tamiya Terashima (TALES FROM EARTHSEA) (60 minutes) that's a great documentary.

Actually that's probably one of the best behind the scenes features I've seen. beer

There's also the big Lost Symphony featurette on the season 4 DVD. It's a bit full of other crew members gushing about the music, but the footage of the rehearsal and planning before the concert are cool.

Also disc 2 of Special Edition has much longer "Music" Chapter (22:22), interviews with Alan & directors, producers.

    And...

Hans Zimmer - The Lion King
2-disc Special Edition has "Music" section running about 25 minutes (!)
Surprisingly, it's mostly interviews with "Scoring/Arrangement Team" (Zimmer, Lebo M, Mancina), rather than "Songwriting Team" (Elton John & Tim Rice).

The most interesting sections are Orchestral Color & Scoring Emotion, entirely Zimmer talking about the process & his thought on the score.

Unfortunately nobody uploaded those two Zimmer interviews, but some of other sections featuring Zimmer & co. are on YouTube.
