Alice and Wolfman are indeed stunning scores in all aspects.

Yeah, but both films leave much to be desired.

Wolfman wasn't great, but not as bad as I was led to believe, entertaining with a few beers.

Tim Burton's films, IMO, get worse and worse, style over substance and I've seen the style over and over and it's bleedin' boring.

I wouldn't say they get worse and worse. BIG FISH was absolutely brilliant, a very mature work.

Even though he's one of my fav directors, he misses the boat sometimes too.
    I am extremely serious.

I was bored from start to finish during Big fish. I can't believe anyone liked it. What's even harder to believe is that many people seem to like it.

  1. My favorite Burton film is Sleepy Hollow. I haven't been terribly impressed with much else he's done (Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Sweeney Todd).

Edward Scissorhands is okay, the only film of his I truly enjoyed was Ed Wood.

Edward Scissorhands is Burton's masterpiece! I'm a huge fan of his early work. Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, etc. Sleepy Hollow was excellent. His more recent efforts haven't really impressed me though.

  2. It's funny, because I always thought that I would instantly take to Burton's material given its bizarre weirdness. But...no.

Batman is rubbish really, it's only good when Jack Nicholson is chewing up the scenery.

I'm apparently the biggest fan in this forum. The only things that I don't REALLY like are ALICE, POTA and SWEENEY TODD. But all of these still have many excellent values that make them worthwhile films. POTA, for example, can be enjoyed for brilliant production design and mood, Tim Roth's performance and Elfman's wonderful music, although the plot has more holes than a swiss cheese and Marky Mark has the charisma of a telephone pole.
    I am extremely serious.

I can safely say my top five scores of the year are:

    1. Alice In Wonderland - Danny Elfman
    2. The Wolfman - Danny Elfman
    3. Tron Legacy - Daft Punk
    4. Inception - Hans Zimmer
    5. The Ghost Writer - Alexandre Desplat

My top three TV scores are:

    1. Lost (Season 6) - Michael Giacchino
    2. Fringe (Season 2) - Chris Tilton
    3. Human Target (Season 1) - Bear McCreary

And other notable mentions include (in alphabetical order):

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader - David Arnold
How To Train Your Dragon - John Powell
Kick Ass - Henry Jackman, Marius Vries, John Murphy, Ilan Eshkeri, Danny Elfman
Knight And Day - John Powell
Prince Of Persia - Harry Gregson-Williams
    Predators - John Debney
Percy Jackson & The Lightening Thief - Christophe Beck
Red Dead Redemption - Bill Elm & Woody Jackson
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 - Alexandre Desplat
The Last Airbender - James Newton Howard
The Next Three Days - Danny Elfman
    Salt - James Newton Howard
Splinter Cell Conviction - Kaveh Cohen, Michael Nielsen, Amon Tobin

In my opinion the strongest composer has been Danny Elfman, and the CD's that remained in my CD player the longest were Fringe (Season 1), Lost (Season 6) and Knight And Day.

A very good year, and that's not including re-recordings or older releases of which there were some gems. cool
  3. Mi top five would be:

1 - How To Train Your Dragon

2 - Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part 1

    3 - The Ghost Writer

4 - Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief

    5 - Inception

    3. TRON: LEGACY - Daft Punk
    4. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - Alexandre Desplat

Though the order is changing constantly, and there are still new contenders to be added...
  4. Victor Reyes' Buried is an effective score for the subject matter.

Fernando Velazquez's 'Devil' features one of the most brilliant main titles cues I've heard recently. The rest of the score is also very, very good. This one should be released!

On the other hand, I agree with most of your choices, being my top of the year as follows:

1 - The Ghost Writer - Alexandre Desplat

    3 - Inception - Hans Zimmer
    4 - Lost (Season 6) - Michael Giacchino / Fringe (Season 1) - Chris Tilton
5 - Prince of Persia - Harry Gregson Williams
6 - The Last Airbender - James Newton Howard
    7 - Black Swan - Clint Mansell

Indeed, specially for this kind of movie, I mean, one scenario, one character....and yet the music is never an intruder but it enhances the film.
