"Eerie soundtrack... evocative..." - Eye for Film

"Haunting music complimenting the action..." - It’s on It’s Gone

Essentially a musical study of inner claustrophobia, newcomer Andrew Hewitt's "black and white" string score for the acclaimed UK thriller Cuckoo is clearly one of 2010's most stylistically coherent film scores.

The score builds most of its mesmerizing underscoring on the simple two-note motif - which is ingeniously based on the bird's call - and it is an impressive lesson in how to construct a truly effective film score.

The album presentation of the Cuckoo score takes the listener on a ride between ominous suspense writing and more tense, ostinato-driven action sequences. Our release of the score co-incides with the film's UK theatrical premiere on December 17.

    Track titles:
    1 Cuckoo - Part 1 1.43
    2 Cuckoo - Part 2 2.10
    3 Scarlet Letter 1.33
    4 Alone and I 1.03
    5 I Waited For You 1.09
    6 Her Master's Voice 1.04
7 Blood Thicker Than Water 1.54
    8 Through A Glass Darkly 1.09
    9 Crossing The Line 0.58
    10 Dripping Footsteps 2.14
    11 UpStairs 1.35
12 You Mean, Hearing Things 3.16
    13 Tangible Truth 1.58
    14 I Spy 2.38
    15 Lone Wolf 2.00
    16 Polly's Choice 3.01
    17 End Credits 1.52

Sounds good. But Mikael, is this an iTunes-only digital release?

We are most likely going to seize our 320 kbit downloads. The sad truth here is that the sales figures doesn't justify the work involved in administration. You won't believe this, but sometimes you are the only one who is buying, Alan...

  1. I'm really disappointed to hear that you may be stopping providing your 320kbps download service. This has been my preferred purchase route.

Will your alternate digital release strategy include routes in addition to iTunes? Several of your earlier releases did appear on Amazon and on your label.

  2. Just to answer the question Mikael missed: "yes", there could be an alternate strategy to just CD and iTunes. This score is available at places such as Amazon.

Does deals with iTunes include no advertising that alternate sources are available?

  3. I've just uploaded my review of Hewitt's score for Cuckoo:

  4. I pointed Andrew in the direction of the review and I received a nice message back from him thanking me for the positive comments I made.

Thanks Alan! Mikael is happy as well, a pity he doesn't often link to Thomas' reviews.

  5. great review Alan, keep up the good work
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  6. Thanks for the positive comments, Thomas. After having listened to the score a lot the review came out in one sitting. I was worried I should have "wordsmithed" it a bit more.

I hate that word "wordsmith", but it does describe the process I was thinking of well.

it's good that things come directly towards ya, I wrote some of my better reviews whilst listening to the score and writing it in one take. I wish I could do that all the time wink
